About This
- READ X AND Y TOGETHER — Tramming a spindle head means checking tilt in two directions. Two dial indicators, each graduated in 0.001 inch, mount on one 1/4 inch shank and read the X and Y axes at the same time, so you can watch both as you adjust the head.
- CHUCKS UP LIKE A CUTTING BIT — Set it up the way you set up a bit: the hardened steel 1/4 inch shank seats in the spindle or router collet. The shank fits standard 1/4 inch collets on most hobby CNC routers and benchtop or mini milling machines, so no separate fixture is needed.
- STAYS STEADY WHILE YOU READ — A 6061 anodized aluminum body and a hardened steel shaft keep the indicators stable on the shank while you take readings and turn the spindle by hand.
- DIAL IN A FLAT SPOILBOARD — Before a surfacing pass or a precision job, rotate the tool to compare readings at opposing points and adjust the head until both indicators read the same. Squaring the head to the table this way helps reduce the scallop lines and steps that show up when the spindle sits slightly out of tram.
- STORE IT WITHOUT KNOCKING THE SETUP — Between jobs the tool and both indicators sit in a foam-cut case that holds them in place, so they stay protected in a drawer or on the bench and travel without getting knocked around.
